What Did You Say?
Aug. 25, 2021 7:00 a.m.
Monique Hammond is a registered pharmacist who lost hearing in her left ear – from a loud folk rock band - at a church fundraiser over 10 years ago. The incident became a life-changer – she had to quit her job at the University of Minnesota Hospital Pharmacy. Monique had graduated with high distinction from the University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy. After losing hearing, she did 5 years of research and wrote the book: What Did You Say? An Unexpected Journey into the World of Hearing Loss (1st and 2nd Editions). Monique was appointed by the governor to the Commission of Deaf, Deafblind and Hard-Of-Hearing Minnesotans, where she completed two terms as vice-chair. She is also past president of the Minnesota Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America. Monique speaks regularly to employees and the members of the public about Hearing Loss and the dangers of loud noise. Monique is a former Rotarian and has spoken - in person and via Zoom to over 180 Rotary Clubs across the US, Canada and other countries. Lighting the Flame, the Origins of Mayo Clinic Health System – Franciscan Healthcare
Oct. 20, 2021 7:00 a.m.
A new :25 minute film has just been released called “Lighting the Flame, the Origins of Mayo Clinic Health System – Franciscan Healthcare.” It is a very artistic film, and includes an original music score and cool drone footage over the bluffs and rivers. The film traces the development of our organization in this region, illuminating the pivotal, pioneering role of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration and the remarkable similarity in the paths that led to creation of both St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse and Mayo Clinic in Rochester. |

We will need volunteers to get the pine trees to Halfway Creek Park for he Holidays in the Park fundraiser. We will meet at the park at 9:00 AM. The trees are located off behind Rt 35 near Trempealeau. They will need to be cut down, loaded on to trailers, transported to the park and then set up and zip tied to the poles provided by the village. If you have a trailer and willing to bring it please do. This will reduce the number of trips back and forth. Will also need a couple of chain saws and people to run them. Last year we had two people cuting, 2-3 people dragging and 2 people loading. It went pretty quick. We also need someone that is good at counting. |

This is an opportunity to show support for Rotary and Rotary Lights. The Holmen Area Rotary Club will be pulling the big wheel float through the parade on Friday November 26th and we need some walkers . This is a fun event to participate in, with all the lights and joyous crowd. The parade winds up at Riverside park for the Rotary Lights opening ceremony. We would like to meet at the float by 5:30. The float will be staged on South 6th Street between Main and Cass. Not sure the exact spot but it is the big wheel and should be easy to spot. Parade starts at 6. |

Rotary Lights is a special event that combines the efforts of the regional Rotary Clubs to create a spectacle that receives hundreds of thousands of food items a year for the area food banks. The success of the event requires that the Rotary Clubs do their part. This is a combined effort with the Holmen Interact Club. Please help us do our part. The task for the day is to take down as many of the lights as possible and get them ready for storage. There are three shifts. Please sign up for one or more shifts. Bring a friend or two or three. See you there!
